One hour north of Vancouver, B.C. nestled in the majestic Coast Mountains lie the Elaho and Squamish rivers. The rivers, flowing through a deep wilderness canyon was the ideal setting for Technaflora’s team building whitewater rafting adventure on June 9, 2006.
Equipped with paddles, three rafts and four experienced Canadian Outback Adventures guides…not to mention life jackets…the team began their adventure at the entrance to “Devils Elbow”. A name that says it all, “Devils Elbow” showed no mercy towards the intermediate rafters as they made their way through the thrilling and powerful Class 3-4 rapids. Within minutes of clearing the Class 3 rapids Jason Goodman, David Maxim and Lyle Thistlethwaite were propelled into the swirling Class 4 mass of “big water”, (whitewater lingo for immense volume and extreme violence).
While the three “swimmers” were jostled and dunked in the frigid 3 degree Celsius water, the rest of the Technaflora team was thrown into rescue mode. As the guides commanded the vessels, hands and oars were thrust out to the trio. Within minutes the men were pulled to safety by their life jackets. Exhausted yet exhilarated, throughout the whole ordeal the only casualties were three oars that broke free.
As for the last leg of the trip, it was easy sailing. There were no “hard forwards”, no Class 4 rapids to contend with, just a slow easy glide through the breathtaking wilderness. At the end of the voyage it was a time to reflect, a time to recap the adventure and a time to be thankful for the strength and courage of our team.
